Poker game: renowned game around the world, the game is played by people from the four corners of the earth of the planet. It is still unknown where poker game appeared and who was its inventor. Some few legends share the story. Here we offer you a couple of them.
The first card game appeared in China. In Persia they used 5 suits deck with 25 cards. The common four suited cards appeared in France.
According to one of the versions, the poker game appeared in China, in the end of the XVII century, according to other sours, in 900. There’s also a speculation that poker game evolved from domino play.
The only true fact is that in the Middle Ages in some European countries people played some game with rules and variations alike poker`s.
The other story says that poker comes from a card game called “primero”, as it was called in Spain and Italy, or “la prime” in France. This game consisted of bets; its goal was to collect the strongest card combination. There were only three card combinations: pairs, three cards of the same value and three one suited cards (flush).
Other legend about poker origin points out the card game “brag” in England in 1700; the game consisted of action rounds and the possibility to bluff! Almost at the same time a card game called “Pooches” appeared in Germany, in France known as – “Piqué”. The rules of those games were similar: only one action round, winning combinations, showdown and bluff. The strongest combination was three cards with the same value: high, three equal cards pair, full house, one pair and high card. It’s considered that poker takes its name and beginnings from those games. The poker game was brought to America by French colonizers. At the beginning poker game appeared in New Orleans, and then it was spreaded really fast thanks to the ships, that swam over the rivers Mississippi and Ohio. The game under the name “poker” is mentioned for the first time in American sources in the XIX century. Early the variations of poker received names from different booze varieties: “whisky”, “gin”, “rum” and etc. then they were all gathered under the term “gin remic”, and after that it was shortened to the term “remic”.
The variety that exists nowadays was named for the first time in 1829 in the memories of the actor Jo Cauhella, who travelled around America. In 1834 people begin to play poker with a 52 cards deck. During the civil war in America other poker varieties appeared: Stud poker, draw poker and straight poker. The game was even considered as the America’s national game for a while, nowadays is the most popular game in the US. In 1870 poker game began its journey back to its motherland: Europe. Colonel Jacob Shank came to the rescue and introduced the game to the Queen Victoria. The distribution on the continent was stopped by world war one. This time American soldiers helped the game. Poker became the first card game played in casino. In the beginning of the XX century, ladies began to play poker, the term “club poker” appeared, and poker gained a lot of variations. The most distributed were: Texas Hold`em, Omaha, five card poker, and seven card poker.
